Express News Service, 13th May 2010

Taking cognizance of a public interest litigation, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Fazilka MLA Surjit Jyani; executive officer, Municipal Council, Fazilka, DC Ferozepurand one Kewal Krishan, who has allegedly taken illegal possession of a rickshaw stand in Cycle Bazar in the city.

The PIL, filed by Navdeep Asija, Secretary (Administration) of Graduates Welfare Association stated, the association had launched a scheme for welfare of rickshaw pullers and citizens from April 4. Under the scheme, the city was divided into five zones and in each zone, a cycle rickshaw stand was provided to the rickshaw pullers.

They have also been provided with a landline, which allows locals to call for a rickshaw at any time.
Another feature of this scheme was the design of rickshaws — it was reduced by 35 kg.

The petitioner alleged Jayani did not like the new scheme and at his instance, Krishan took illegal possession of the parking space and converted it into a shop. Despite repeated notices by the MC, the encroacher, who is backed the MLA, refused to vacate.
