Fazilka association to honour 5 for excellence

FEROZEPUR: Graduate Welfare Association, Fazilka (GWAF) will honour
five youths with the Fazilka Youth Icon Award-2013 for excelling in
various fields.
The awards will be presented at the Seventh Fazilka Heritage Festival
on April 21.
Every year, to acknowledge the spirit of youth of Fazilka, five youths
are selected for the award. It is an effort to recognise and reward
individual excellence and exemplary achievement in the fields of
business, sports, entertainment, media, social welfare and justice,
health care, science and technology, arts, politics, entertainment,
literature and fashion, said Navdeep Asija, secretary general, GWAF.
This year out of five, three awards will go to women.
One of the awardees, Dr Rachna Monga, topped the MS examination
conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in 2012. She
remained a topper throughout and had topped the district in the CBSE
class 10 and 12 exams.
Talking to reporters, Dr Rachna said, "My aim is to provide the best
medical facility to poor people."
The award also goes to 24-year-old Shobhna Juneja, a health freak, who
is a master yoga trainer. Shobhna did her masters in mass
communication from Panjab University, Chandigarh. After serving as a
PR person and CSR executive in Vedanta Resources, she graduated as a
yoga teacher. She has taught more than 60 professional classes in New
Delhi and 180 classes at Fitness and Yoga (FnY) Studio in Chandigarh.
Currently, Shobhna is pursuing her masters in yoga and working as
master trainer, FnY Studio, Chandigarh. Her mantra: to keep this world
"fit and healthy" and she considers this as best service to mankind.
The third girl to be honoured is Kanika Kamra, a creative person and
graduate in commerce, who is pursuing masters in fashion design.
Kanika won many awards during her schooling and college. Her creative
design work was published by renowned fashion magazine, Vogue India.
She was also part of the implementation team of Lakme Fashion Week.
She gives the credit of her success to her family. "My family is my
strength as it always encourages me to keep going".
Another awardee, 23-year-old Nitish Dhawan is the first from Fazilka
to have joined the prestigious Indian Space Research Organisation
(ISRO) as scientist. He is currently working in propulsion group in
the field of high explosives. He graduated from IIT Roorkee in
mechanical engineering.
During his B Tech days at Roorkee, he along with his team designed and
fabricated a wireless electric wheelchair for the physically
challenged.
The next awardee, Shivansh Kamra, 25, is an engineer by education, a
businessman by profession, a blogger by passion and also a writer. His
first book 'Love is a Dirty Game' released in September 2012 and sold
more than 5,000 copies in the first quarter. The Fazilka Army School
pass-out did his professional degree from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering
College, Ludhiana. At present, he is a full- time author at Srishti
Publication, New Delhi, and his upcoming projects are a documentary on
gamblers and a novel. For his success he gives credit to his family
for their "unconditional" support.
Dr Bhupinder, GWAF official, said, "Fazil in Persian means a learned
person. The achievements of these youth icons in diverse fields
endorse the legacy and vibrancy of our small town, Fazilka. Limited
educational facilities and exposure in this border town make their
achievements all the more important."

The judges said they had selected the awardees based on their
uniqueness of field along with a clear vision. "They will be
flag-bearers of the legacy of Fazilka town and will inspire
generations to come," said Navdeep Asija, secretary, GWAF.
